Growing Up

Posted on Dec 25th, 2007 by Yogi : Smarter than Your Average Bear Yogi
It's Christmas, a time for families to come together and for wonderful things to happen. And surely that did happen today. My brother got engaged this morning.

A little back story on my brother however. My brother has had one other serious relationship. It was when he was a senior in high school (he is now 25). Her name was Diana and she was a cute little blonde who, at the time was a three years younger than him (and one older than me). She was a sophomore and one of the sweetest girls you could ever meet. She was popular and everyone loved her. I loved her.

They dated for three years and for the first two, things were great. He went off to college, but was only 4 hours, by car away. The last year, however, she went to school 4 hours away, by plane, making things a little harder. I had just begun a serious relationship myself that was long distance and seeing his fall apart broke my heart. If his couldn't last what hope did mine have?

After they broke up, he went through a small group of "friends" who he simply just took out a couple of times. By the time I was a sophomore in college, it seemed like it would be a very long time before he was serious with anyone again, while I was still extremely serious with the same guy.

However, that Christmas, while my relationship began to falter, my brother showed up to Christmas with a pretty brunette named Kristie. That right off the bat was odd. My brother didn't date brunettes. Not a single one. Not even one of the girls he took out only once was ever not a blonde. But here was Kristie.

By May, they were living together. My relationship was officially over and my brother was head over heels for a girl I hadn't spoken more than two words to. She was quiet, shy, and well...a brunette. Don't get me wrong, I'm a brunette. My whole family are brunettes. It was just weird.

Now, three years later from that first Christmas, she returns to our house with my brother after spending the day with her family, with a diamond on her finger. But things have changed.

I love Kristie. She makes my brother smile. He's a nicer person around her. She gets along with my parents, my relatives (even the ones that don't get along with each other). She's perfect. But who would have thought, three years ago, that she would be the one with the ring on her finger and not me.

If you asked me then, I would have bet all my cards that it would have been me. I'm glad its her.

That is one of the coolest stories I have ever read. It sounds like a good movie. :)
